About a week or so ago I was contacted by good friend and fellow photographer Jeff Mosier of Jeffrey Mosier Photography about the possibility of shooting a surprise engagement session in Chinatown. To give you a little background Jeff has been a massive inspiration in my own photographic career so to be asked by him to shoot a bag of potatoes let alone an engagement session was a massive honor to me and I immediately jumped at the chance. It turns out that our groom to be Graham had planned an amazing proposal for Madeline at the corner of Elizabeth and Bayard. A small street corner in Chinatown surrounded by bubble tea shops and peking duck houses. Graham had also hired two amazing musicians as well to play the song Ho Hey by the Lumineers during the surprise proposal.
And there we were and so we waited. On the corner of Elizabeth and Bayard surrounded by New Yorkers of all shapes and sizes waiting for Graham and Madeline to cross our paths. The musicians warmed up and I took position across the street. The first moment I saw them walking hand in hand down Bayard and towards us was exhilarating knowing what was about to happen. As they crossed the street the musicians began to play and Graham stopped Madeline in place. In each second it took for him to get down on one knee I and everyone around was rooting for them both. You could feel a surge of energy run through the crowd as everyone including our unsuspecting bride to be realized what was happening. For a city with countless people, taxis, traffic, and congestion everything seemed to go silent. For a short while the famous song Ho Hey by the Lumineers filled the streets of Chinatown.
Without question SHE SAID YES!!! What seemed like months of planning and recon was over in a few moments and we decided to take a short walk to the corner of Bowery and Canal for some quick shots before they headed to Momofuku Noodle Bar for some fried chicken. After the last few shots we parted ways and I wished them luck in their new life together and all that was about to happen to and for them. A life that truly started after Madeline as the song says “took a bus to Chinatown”
